There are no physical buttons for operation (only the power button), but I found the touchscreen responsive and the menus intuitive to navigate. The SD card slot is at the bottom left of the front panel so that you can print directly from the camera’s memory card.

The rear paper tray, which should be used for photo printing, can hold up to 20 sheets of photo paper.

Print speed on plain paper is slightly faster than average. The TR8622 printed our five-page text report in 32.6 seconds (or 9.2 ppm) versus the 8.8 ppm normal for practically identical models. Also, the TR8622 printed our six-page record comprising mixed text and color graphics in 1 minute, 52 seconds (or 3.2 ppm) compared to an average of 2 minutes, 13 seconds (or 2.7 ppm).

As with double-sided text printing, there is a 14-second delay before printing begins on the second side of each page. Again, the Brother MFC-J995DW is faster, rendering two-sided color text/graphic prints at three ppm, while the HP Envy 7855 is much slower, at 1.2 ppm.

The Pixma TR8622 copies a 10-page (five double-sheet) text document in 5 minutes, or two ppm, excluding the time to reload the document into the ADF.

The same goes for black-and-white scans in PDF format at 300 dpi. The TR8622 captured a scan in 8.8 seconds faster than the 11-second average. The Canon TS9120 performs the same scan in 7.7 seconds.

The edges look quite sharp, although the letterform could be slimmer. Copies of text documents fed through the ADF, in particular, come out with fonts that appear fatter and have less sharp edges than reproductions placed on the flatbed.

Similarly, to perform a test scan, we were required to do so from a PC, where we could set the resolution in the scanning software.

The TR8622 uses five ink cartridges. There are three colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow) and one dye-based black ink. In addition, pigment-based black ink is used to print documents on plain paper, while the black dye is used more in glossy photo prints. Using standard cartridges, the cost per page of text is 8 cents. This calculation only includes black ink pigments.

For the total cost of this text/mixed color graphic page, we include the cost of dye-based black ink.

Canon Pixma TR8622 Decision

The Canon Pixma TR8622 delivers office features at a reasonable price with a document feeder and duplexer. Other than that, the TR8622 doesn’t disappoint in picture quality. Canon Pixma TR8622 is much faster for glossy photo printing.
